When electronic music creates a clarion call, a signifying moment of epic beauty and emotional clarity, it’s probably one of the most powerful things around. That may be an opening gambit of overblown hyperbole but for the thousands of us that envelop ourselves in electronic music it’s one ceded with a great deal of truth. And if there’s a record label or collective of DJs who specialise in the kind of heartfelt emotional power of dance music at its finest, then that imprint is Innervisions.
Quite simply the German triumvirate of Ame, Dixon and Henrik Schwarz have been at the centre of the more subtle expressions of soulful house and techno at its best over the past decade. Remember how Ame gave the cold minimal sound a heartbeat with ‘Rej’ in 2005 (above)? Henrik warping James Brown’s ‘This is a man’s world’ into a swaggering percussive house groove? Or Dixon deftly weaving African rhythms, warped synths and deeper than deep baselines into the kind of textured DJ sets you lose yourself in for hours?
Although not for everyone, the Innervisions signature remains a great draw and for the first time ever they will be doing a full showcase in Liverpool for the label. They’ll be playing for Freeze at Haus Warehouse on Saturday 21st September, with Dixon and Ame playing as part of the event together in the city for the first time (both have appeared separetly in the past). You can check a cracking video of the pair in our Month Ahead feature on Liverpool this month,
Joining them will be the very special guest appearance of Guy Gerber. Another DJ who prizes melody and groove above all else, Guy has had a great 2013, crowned by his weekly residency at Pacha as part of the iconic club’s reintegration with its underground roots.
